Bessemer, AL – The Crescent City Kings traveled to Bessemer, AL for the GDFL game of the week. The showdown between the two 2-0 football squads delivered on excitement but was not a test of wills.
The Kings ceased control early after a few Tigers miscues put them in position for early points. On the Tigers first drive the ball was snapped over the head of the quarterback and after a short tussle was recovered in the end zone for Kings touchdown. The woes for the Tigers continued as another fumble would put the Kings in plus territory and they capped the drive with a 3 yard Derek Williams touchdown, for a 13-0 lead.
When it seemed as if the Tigers settled the Kings defense made them instantly uncomfortable with tight blanket coverage in the secondary and physical play in the trenches. On this night the Kings ruled, their physicality was noticeable from the onset and helped as they built a commanding lead.
A game billed to be a contest between two GDFL powers turned into a laugher when Kings defensive back Harlow Pollar slammed into the Tigers running back in the backfield stripped him and raced 60 plus yards for a touchdown.
With a comfortable 19-8 halftime lead the Kings coasted to a 31-20 victory. However, they were forced to withstand a furious Tigers rally late to escape with the W in hand.
Tenacious D
The Crescent City Kings defense tamed theTigers offense with creative blitzing and dynamic pass coverage. On the ground the forced several fumbles and were able to recover six from the opposition. Defensive tackle Mike Gorum recovered three on the night.
The Kings swatted passes, stymied rushers and bullied the Tigers to the tune of 9 passes deflected, 6 fumble recoveries, 4 interceptions, 6.5 sacks, 15 tackles behind the line of scrimmage and 2 spectacular touchdowns. If this were the NFL, the Kings would have posted a fantasy defense score of 40 plus.
Because of the outstanding defensive play the Kings were never really threatened and the Tigers would never get closer than 11 points after the first quarter. Through 3 games the Kings defense has harassed opposing QBs into 18 sacks and 7 interceptions. The unit has also recovered 8 fumbles. The Kings 2015 defense is protecting the kingdom with secret service like precision. Allowing only 14 points per game it is clear the coach Frederick Washington is building a unit for a deep playoff run.
