Crush Overwhelm Kings

Macon, Ga – The Crescent City Kings undefeated season came to a crushing end after a 17-15 loss against the now (5-2) Georgia Crush. The Crush played with more passion, poise, and grit to pull off the upset of the GDFL’s 3rd ranked team. From the onset, the Crush set a physical tone, playing with the
desperation of a team fighting for its playoff life. The Kings, with a potential division title on the horizon, could not match the Crush and watched as a late Melvin Davis pass went off the hands of Akeem Davis and into the hands of a Crush defender to seal the upset.

The Kings, now (6-1), were beaten by a veteran, well coached Crush squad that limited the Kings offensive effectiveness and did just enough against the defensive unit. The Kings jumped out to an early 9-0 lead but the Crush stayed the course and continued to apply pressure. The Kings played a sloppy game filled with turnovers, penalties, and blown assignments. The Crush capitalized on Kings mistakes and quickly erased the 9-0 deficit to take a 10-9 lead before halftime.

The Kings began the second half in promising fashion, marching the football straight down the field and retaking the lead on a Derek Williams touchdown run. The thrill was short lived, only a few plays later CB Corey Kennedy was victimized for a momentum changing TD that lit a fire under the home team. As the minutes began to tick away, it was the Criush who elevated their play and the Kings found themselves on the wrong side of a 17-15 final score.

The Kings drove the ball all the way to Crush 2 yard line as the final seconds of the game ticked away. Instead of rising to the occasion, the Kings shrunk in the moment committing a holding penalty that backed the offense up to the 12 yard line. After two short running plays, the Kings faced with a 3rd and Goal went for the TD and after some elusive moves Melvin Davis’ pass sailed through the hands of Akeem Davis and into the hands of the Crush sealing the defeat. The loss serves as both a wake-up call and a reality check. Next week’s match-up, with the Memphis Blast, is for the Midsouth Division Crown and the Kings will need to be focused and prepared for a hungry GDFL heavyweight that may sense vulnerability in the Kings recent play.
